ACA Special Enrollment Periods

The life events that open a 60-day window, and what you have to prove.

  • Health insurance and the ACA Marketplace
  • Reviewed October 19, 2026

A window opened by an event, not a date

Outside open enrollment you can only buy Marketplace coverage if something has happened that qualifies you. That something is a qualifying life event, and it generally gives you 60 days from the event to enroll.

Sixty days is short. People commonly lose the window while waiting for paperwork from a former employer, so it is worth starting the application before you have every document in hand.

What qualifies

The main categories are losing other coverage, changes in household, changes in residence, and a handful of other circumstances.

  • Losing qualifying health coverage, including job-based coverage, a parent plan at 26, or Medicaid or CHIP eligibility ending.
  • Getting married, having or adopting a child, or placing a child in foster care.
  • Moving to a new home in a new ZIP code or county, if you had coverage before the move.
  • A change in income or household that affects your eligibility for savings.
  • Leaving incarceration, gaining lawful presence, or becoming a US citizen.

Expect to be asked for documents

The Marketplace commonly asks for proof of the event: a letter showing the date other coverage ended, a marriage certificate, a lease or similar. If you do not supply acceptable documents, the Special Enrollment Period can be refused or the enrollment ended.

A rule finalised in 2025 would have required that verification before coverage started. A court stayed that requirement for federally run marketplaces, and Florida is one, so coverage currently begins while verification follows. That makes sending documents promptly a practical matter rather than a precondition, but it does not make it optional.

Voluntarily dropping coverage does not count

Cancelling a plan you could have kept, or losing coverage for not paying the premium, does not open a Special Enrollment Period. Neither does a plan simply becoming more expensive at renewal.

The qualifying event is losing coverage you did not choose to lose.

Frequently asked questions

How long is an ACA Special Enrollment Period?

Generally 60 days from the qualifying life event. Some events, such as losing other coverage, also allow you to apply up to 60 days before the loss so the new plan starts without a gap.

Does losing my job coverage qualify me?

Yes. Losing qualifying job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, and you generally have 60 days from the date it ends. Choosing to drop coverage you could have kept does not qualify.

Will I have to prove the life event?

Usually. The Marketplace commonly asks for documents such as a letter showing when previous coverage ended. If acceptable documents are not provided, the Special Enrollment Period can be denied or the enrollment ended.

Does a premium increase at renewal qualify me?

No. A plan becoming more expensive is not a qualifying life event, nor is voluntarily cancelling a plan or losing coverage for non-payment. The qualifying events involve losing coverage you did not choose to give up.
